This new painting was recently completed as a commission for a family in Pennsylvania. They originally were interested in my painting Journey, but it had just previously gone into a private collection. They needed a slightly different color pallette and decided to have me create a new painting for them. Sometimes it is most challenging to try to recreate something that you did before. This was no exception! After a few false starts, it came together and I love it! I hope the new collectors will as well!

This encaustic painting is one of a series of inspirational pieces done in support of Keep A Child Alive. 25% of each painting sold goes to Keep A Child Alive. They work primarily in Aftica and India to help stop the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Each painting is 8"x8", framed in a black 10"x10" floater frame - ready to hang. Each painting is $200, with $50 being donated to Keep A Child Alive. These paintings are created using encaustic (molten beeswax with damar resin and pigment). The encaustic is painted in layers with each layer being fused to the one below using a torch flame. The word is transferred to the painting with carbon paper then carved...this process continues numerous times. I then add the word in Braille, using dots of encaustic so you can "feel" the inspiration.

This is a new encaustic with oil painting...I think it is another start of a new series to explore. This painting started with drawing with inktense pencils then layered medium and started adding encaustic color. After a good number of layers, I scraped back to reveal some of the original drawing, then I scribed some of the lines and rubbed in oil paint and then removed oil paint. Several more layers of encaustic and this is the result. This painting is 8"x8" on cradled panel and will be framed in a black floater frame.

"I'm Honored"

Named after words written to me that I was in fact honored to receive. This is a new work, encaustic with collage on cradled panel, 11x14. Inspired by the idea of anthropology, or the way we live. Not in a nostalgic manner but rather as an experience of our shrinking world, exploring new and old together. Part of a new series to include old letters, love letters, packaging, postcards, and things in other languages and all interesting found things.

INSPIRED ART CHICAGO

Inspired Art Chicago pairs poems from their America Scores program that were created by school age kids with artists who create a painting to go with a particular poem. This is the third year of this auction fundraiser and my third year participating. While the other artists are primarily from the Chicago area I found the program inspiring and wanted to be a part of it. This year I decided to put the focus on the poem as primary element of the painting. I have signed on the back. This is a highly textured mixed media painting, 8 x 8 on 2" cradled hardboard and will be available at the auction at South Halsted Gallery on September 30. Here is a hot off the easel new painting titled Nest I Cage (Untitled 88). This is a mixed media piece including oil and cold wax, gold leaf, acrylic and charcoal. This is a continuation of the Nest I Cage series and is taking on a new shape as the ideas and work deepen.

CANNON GALLERY JURIED BIENNIAL

Saturday night was the opening reception for the 2011 William D. Cannon Gallery Juried Biennial. The night was a huge success with 850 people in attendance! The show features 61 artists from San Diego County and is a look at what's happening in contemporary art in the area. The exhibition was juried by Larry Baza, co-owner of Baza-Noel Fine Art in San Diego, and Peter Frank, Curator for the Riverside Museum of Art and art critic for The Huffington Post. The jurors poured through over 1100 images and pared it down to the pieces shown. I am very proud to be included in the wonderful group and will be including further images from the show in the upcoming weeks.
My piece is titled SOUL FINDING and is an installation featuring an original joomchi with shoes.
The exhibition runs January 30 through March 18, 2011.

ALEXANDRA SINGS WITH CORI

So exciting! Alexandra and Cori were in town from NYC and we were lucky enough to have them play for us at the Front Porch Gallery opening reception yesterday in Carlsbad, CA. The new exhibit, WENDELL: An Animated Adventure was a hit, and so was the music. Cori is a very talented musician and Alexandra's voice is just wonderful! Everyone enjoyed the day!

A BIT OF A DEPARTURE

Just finished this painting, it was a commission piece for my client's guest room. This was aptly named as it is a very different style for me. It is a fairly large painting, 30 x 60 done over 3 gallery wrapped canvases I enjoyed doing the piece and am happy that it is hanging and the clients Love It and say it is perfect in the room.
While I always enjoy doing commissioned works, I do prefer to be have more freedom in my approach. This was a test in symmetry and color, and I generally have a bit more heart and head problem solving to do in my regular abstract works.

RENEWAL

I finally took the picture of this painting I completed a while ago. It uses a color palette I don't often work with but really like. It seems life these days is a constant stream of personal reflection and renewal. I continue to pursue my goal and intention of being brave in my work. If you feel something, anything, then I have been successful.

TWINDIVIDUALITY

A collaboration between artist Linda Shaffer and I. This piece titled TWINDIVIDUALITY explores the twin relationship recognizing twins being the same but different linked by nature, events, time and like elements. We started with like materials and then working independently the two pieces ultimately ended up side by side, linked but each with its own separate identity. Thus representing the complex relationship between twins as complicated, loving, and playful. My half of the piece is on the left and describes the complex connection between twins, or for that fact any familial relationship. This piece is created with over 80% recycled materials.

NEST I CAGE

This is the beginning of a new series of paintings, all part of the NEST / CAGE series. This particular group is made of 12x12 paintings which can be individually framed, or group framed. These are based on water, for me, the ocean. I am deeply connected to the ocean, am at or near it every day. Water is powerful, calming, hypnotic, fun. It also can be overwhelming, scary and potentially life threatening. These works are multi layered exploring these ideas. Large scale paintings are also in the works.

This is my latest painting in the Nest / Cage series title Chasing the Dream.
In this work I am expressing some of what my Dad is going through in his current fight against cancer. His condition and pain medications make it sometimes difficult to distinguish between what is real in the here and now and what is a dream or memory. Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas, 48X60.

Look at this beautiful painting I came across while doing some research for the oil and cold wax paintings I am working on. New York Exhibit

Matthew Rose, Artist/Writer based in Paris has put out an open call to artists to create a piece of work for an unbound book titled, A Book About Death. Each artist then creates 500 postcards and sends to NYC for the exhibition. This is my latest painting, an expression of support for the people of Iran who are struggling for their freedom and independence. My belief is that all people crave, deserve and have the right to freedom. The tragedy lies in places where it has to be so hard fought and innocent lives are lost. MARY BECK AT FRONT PORCH GALLERY

Wow! Take a look at Mary Beck and one of her beautiful paintings currently on exhibit at Front Porch Gallery in Carlsbad, CA where I serve as Assistant Director. Mary has a unique vision when it comes to painting water, she is most interested in capturing the texture and movement in the water. Her work varies from very realistic, some of the pieces are commonly mistaken for photographs to borderline abstract, with most falling closer to a combination between realism with almost a surrealistic quality. Mary is a wonderful artist as well as being a lovely person. Recycled Fashion Show!

Take a look at this wonderful dress created by my friend, artist Linda Shaffer. It was recently seen on the runway at the Escondido Center for the Performing Arts as part of Fashion Week. This is one of three pieces in Linda's collection titled "Let's Go Shopping!". The crowd was audible as Linda's first garment, a dress made from recycled Target bags came on to the runway. Her clothes were playful, with imagination and really well executed. Linda was honored by being one of the winners of the evening. Look for a full article about Linda and her work in an upcoming edition of The Reader.

A Room with a View

I love New York City! I love the buildings, all the people, all the action. Mostly, I love the art, all the art - the dance, the museums, the theatre...and the galleries. Everything seem to be about art in NYC. Great food too! I have been fortunate enough to have shown at the Rhonda Schaller Gallery in Chelsea. I look forward to exhibiting there again. I love Broadway, most recently when I was visiting my daughter Alexandra (an NYU student - this is the view from her room!), we saw the recent Tony Award winning play, August:Osage County. It was an amazing, intensely emotional experience with such wonderful writing and acting. We also saw the Tony Award winning musical City Heights which had some really wonderful parts and was really well received by the audience. One night, we had pre-theatre dinner and drinks and one night we had after dinner dessert and drinks.

I am pleased to have been asked to judge the Vista Art Foundation's March members show. There is a lot of interesting art on view, and some wonderful pieces were selected as winners. If you have a chance take a look at their Gallery 204 at 204 Main St., Vista California (North County - San Diego). The Opening/Reception will be Friday March 13 from 5:30 to 8pm. Featured artist for the month is Karen Brake, a wonderful oil painter and art instructor. My painting, City, seen here is on display throughout this month's exhibit.

Award Winner at the Bonita Museum!

My painting, Traditions has been accepted into the Bonita Museum Juried Fine Art Exhibit Opening March 7 through May 2, 2009 in Bonita, CA.

The juror for the exhibit was John Marciari – Curator, Italian and Spanish Paintings at the San Diego Museum of Art. The painting has been given an award to be announced at the Opening Reception.

This is my second time being included in the venues juried exhibition and I am appreciative of the opportunity!

The painting, Africa Series (Landscape I) is as the name implies, part of my Africa Series. 25% of the sales go to KCA, Keep A Child Alive, www.keepachildalive.org , an organization devoted to providing medicine and clinics for the children of Africa to help stop the AIDS pandemic.

In this series, my intention is to show both the desolate nature of the land, and the colorful hopeful culture and people. In the end, it is all about hope.

Improve the Silence

It has been a little while since my last post, looks like time got away from me! So, here we are in the dawn of a new era, elections are over (thank you!) and hopefully the economy will be getting back on track. I hope you like this new painting, it is the first of three I have been working on for some time. It is going to be a large new series, and I justt decided on a name (see title of this post). The idea is about transitions, uplifting, rebirth, change, truth, and the mix of old and new. Please stay tuned for others in the series to be published. Santa Fe Art Institute

I recently had the wonderful experience of taking a great week long workshop in Santa Fe, NM at the Santa Fe Art Institute. Nancy Reyner was the instructor and I will write more about her later. Our workshop was held in one of the very large studio spaces. We were a group of 16 artists, half were from the Santa Fe area and the other half were like me, out of towners! Two of us were from Southern Cal and the furthest person came in from Pennsylvania.

The workshop itself was about the technical aspects of working with Golden Acrylic paints, gels and mediums. There was truly a wealth of information. I took away a lot of great techniques and a few that I now know I don't like and won't use. After the week of workshop, my husband Terry flew in and we had a long weekend together exploring galleries and wonderful restaurants in Santa Fe. We also took a day trip to Taos. All in all a worthwhile trip!

Gallerie Saint Tropez Reception at St. Tropez Bistro

Friday July 18 was the reception to view my 12 paintings currently on exhibit at Gallerie Saint Tropez which is in the St. Tropez Bistro in Hillcrest at 3805 5th Ave. Thanks so much to everyone who came, it really was a nice evening. Thanks to Othnan at St. Tropez Bistro for providing the exhibit venue, champagne, hors d'oeuvres and great music! What a nice event it was on Saturday, June 7. All kinds of art and music around Adams Ave. in Kensington and Normal Heights. As I am the resident Artist at Diesel Salon, they were open to all of their clients as well as all the event goers. Lots of good munchies and wine, too! Happily I report my painting Fusion was sold during the event!

Next up:

A solo exhibit of new paintings will be going up soon and will be exhibited for 2 months at the St. Tropez Bistro in Hillcrest. They will be hosting a champagne and hors d'oeuvres reception.... the date is TBD. Please check back.
